A documentary about Ushio and Noriko Shinohara: two aging, starving artists who’ve been married for four decades and trying to make it in the art world for even longer. As the former tries to reclaim his former glory with mixed-at-best results, the latter tries to finally make a name for herself.
Really doesn’t matter if you’re familiar with the Shinoharas or care a lick about art. It nevertheless makes for a gorgeous, honest, complex portrait of two people finally coming into own at an age where some folks are ready to throw in the towel. Surprisingly raw stuff that’ll stick with you after. Has a hell of an intro, too.
It’s got a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
